Old School Packers: Packers-Raiders history runs deep

Thirteen games in 50 years doesn’t seem like a lot of history, but there have been some incredible moments between the Green Bay Packers and Oakland Raiders over the years ... well, at least for the Packers. 

The Packers lead the all-time series, 8-5, and the first meeting was about as big as it can get: a Green Bay victory in Super Bowl II in 1968.

Names like Ken Stabler, Art Shell, Gene Upshaw, Tim Brown and Rich Gannon were just a few of the memorable Oakland / Los Angeles Raiders players to clash with the Packers through the years.

And, as an interesting note to the rivalry, the Packers followed up their victory in Super Bowl II with five consecutive losses to the Raiders through 1987. 

Since then, however, the Packers have won all seven matchups, including their most recent game in 2015.

As the Packers travel to Oakland on Friday for their third exhibition game, here’s a look back at original newspaper accounts of some of the most memorable meetings:

Dec. 26, 1993: The Birth of the Lambeau Leap

The Packers' 28-0 victory over the Raiders in the second-to-last game of the '93 season clinched a playoff berth for Green Bay for the first time since 1972. And - while not notable at the time - it also featured the debut of the Lambeau Leap.

Sept. 12, 1999: Painful, emotional game for Favre in unforgettable comeback

An emotional wreck was one way to describe Brett Favre after the Packers quarterback led his team to a heart-stopping, last-second 28-24 victory over the Raiders in Green Bay's 1999 season opener. A physical wreck would be another. The comeback would be remembered as one of Favre's greatest.

Dec. 22, 2003: Heavy-Hearted Favre Picks Apart Raiders

During a Monday night game, the eyes of America gazed upon Brett Favre in his hour of immense personal grief following the death of his father. Somehow, some way, Favre found a way to play one of the greatest games of his fabulous career.

And, of course, Super Bowl II

Combining the aerial artistry of Bart Starr and the accurate field goal kicking of Don Chandler, the Packers won their second straight Super Bowl by routing the Raiders, 33-14.
