Five most awkward 'Ted' interactions
Acting alongside a knee-high teddy bear would be hard enough. But director Seth MacFarlane's fuzzy creation is actually a computer-generated character added post-production to 2012's Ted and the new Ted 2 (in theaters Friday).
A stuffed animal stands in at rehearsals, but the cameras roll with nothing. Here are five standout situations that arose in shooting the R-rated comedies.
Kissing Ted
Jessica Barth (as Tami-Lynn) kisses her bear love interest repeatedly, including at their wedding. This involves getting on her knees, embracing and smooching nothing.
"It's very technical and choreographed: Bend here, put your hand here and your mouth here," says Barth.
The worst kissing moment came in the first Ted's party make out. "I was literally opening and closing my mouth to air," says Barth. "It was so awkward and strange. And then it was like, 'Can you do it for a little longer?' "
Producer Jason Clark recalls shooting a brief Ted sex scene with Tami-Lynn and Ted. A set hand had to help rehearse simulated teddy bear movements with Barth.
For filming, "Jessica was hidden behind grocery boxes, all but her legs," says Clark. "We asked her to improvise a 'good time' rocking back and forth. It was hysterical and awkward."
Dancing with Ted
Mark Wahlberg had difficulty during a big-band dance sequence at his best buddy Ted's wedding
"It was like 'Oh, God, I have to dance with Ted.' But he's not there. It's just me on my own, full-on choreography," says Wahlberg. "There are 500 Boston extras standing there. It's 7 a.m. They're not in on the joke. They just stare."
Mercifully, the segment was cut from the final film.
"I'm glad," says Wahlberg. "But then again, I was kind of annoyed, because I practiced so much for that."
Dining with Ted
Playing Ted's lawyer, newcomer Amanda Seyfried had to adjust to shooting the diner scenes with Wahlberg and the bear.
"I was looking at nothing. Just a piece of tape on a booth. I kept turning my head to react to Seth, because he was around (voicing the character). It was just so awkward. But Mark was just looking at that spot. He's a pro."
"After about a week, it got easier," she says.
Handing things to Ted
Any time Ted holds anything, it's computer animated. It's trickier when he's handed something, like a bong.
"When Amanda is holding it, it's real bong. But when she had to pass it over to Ted, Amanda drops it on the ground in Ted's space," says MacFarlane. "The real object on the ground is painted out. Somehow, we managed without broken bongs."
Fighting with Ted
Barth had to argue with Ted during a fierce Ted 2 scene. MacFarlane stood offstage and argued back.
"I had to get so upset, all to nothing. It's a challenge. We both lost our voices in that crazy fight," says Barth. "When Ted flips the table, there's actually a string tied that's pulled up."
The ultimate fight was a bear/human brawl in Ted that actually was a solo Wahlberg trashing a hotel room, flying through a shower curtain and having his bare bottom spanked.
"I worried about it looking ridiculous as I was flailing around all day," says Wahlberg. "A grip actually came in to pull my pants down and a prop guy whipped me with an antenna."
Wahlberg was so discouraged that he apologized to MacFarlane, Then he was blown away when he saw the final product.
"That was one of the most memorable scenes in the whole movie," says Wahlberg.
